Scope and Contents

George H. Horn, practicing physician, army surgeon and distinguished Coleopterist was closely associated with both the Academy and the Entomological Society. He became president of the latter and made important bequests to it of study collections and funds.

This collection contains a biography of Horn, biographical notes, a copy of part of his will, a 144-page paper on Coleoptera, correspondence, and 12 certificates of memberships and honors in various societies.

Scope and Contents This scrapbook was prepared from photographs by various Costa Ricans and presented to P. P. Calvert, November 1918 by José M. Tristan, whose presentation letter is included. News clippings from Costa Rican newspapers and a few American papers have been pasted in. Photographs are by J. Fidel Tristan. who made a speciality of volcanic photography. Overview

Even at the age of 14, this author was keeping notebooks of his field observations and with other enthusiasts, i.e. friends at the Central High School, and in the local Agassiz Club, preparing information for catalogs of various groups of animals. Notebooks and illustrated records, as well as correspondence with his colleagues are found in this collection.

Scope and Contents Philip Powell Calvert and Amelia Smith Calvert's Costa Rica Expedition Papers include notebooks, diaries, photographs and maps. The Calverts, Philip and Amelia, spent more than a year in Costa Rica studying natural history. The itinerary and field notes were preserved in 10 small notebooks, photographs were taken (31 included here) and a diary written, the latter occupying 2 volumes. Scope and Contents As a result of his stay in Europe, where he became acquainted with many of the principals in this great publication Biologia Centrali Americana, Calvert was invited to write the Odonata volume of the division of insects.
